This month, Carlton Draught has aired the new Sky Troop ad on TV. Apparently it was launched in the cinemas and made available on the internet before it landed onto our television screens. Talk about viral marketing! It features a Sky Troop jumping out from a 50-foot Carlton Draught beer glass and forming the word WOW. It’s funny, entertaining, looks good visually & worth taking a look! Does it make any sense? I don’t know but I did find myself laughing!

Isn’t that an oxymoron in itself?
Hummer’s new campaign definitely doesn’t help its case, with the slogan – ‘Seriously Get Lost’.

These pics have been sitting about in my iphoto for nearly a year and were snapped at an exhibition in the London’s Tate Modern Turbine Hall (one of my fav buildings) around July 2007. The exhibition, ‘Global Cities‘ aimed to highlight the intensity and effect of the worlds population growth ten Global Cities “through issues such as sustainability, public space and social inclusion.“ Laser cut installations, huge graphic walls and dynamic video walls basically made it a designers wet dream and I was lucky enough to be in London when it was on. The impressive scale of the exhibit really helped convey the message of a global population bursting at the seams.

Just this past week, will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas has been awarded a Webby Award for Artist of the Year (equivalent to the Oscars for websites, interactive advertising and online video) in recognition of his support to US Presidential candidate Barack Obama and his contribution to politics with his “Yes We Can” video. It is a collage style music video inspired by Barack Obama’s speech. The video apparently was viewed 17 million times and has been a tremendous viral success.

Don’t we all love a nice screensaver…well, here’s a couple of nicely designed but also very customisable ones I recently found:
Word Clock. Fully customisable typography, colours, sizes, alignment.
Pixel Breaker Polar Clock. Built with AS3 and available in many different languages!
They’re both very similar to our Igloo Countdown with which you can count down to friday arvo drinks, when you’ll have your last filthy cigarette, your next holiday or birthday or even until the New Year.
So now all you need to do is…install…wait…wait…wait some more…and be amazed!

Connex is not my friend!
Having been traveling for over a year out of the last three and using the public transport systems in over a dozen large cities around the world, it becomes clear just how bad things are for Melbourne commuters. On top of the expensive fares, frequent delays and cancelations we’re also being shown messages suggesting the problems are out of the control of Connex. TV ads ask us to Imagine moving a city in a day on our own!
I cant help thinking that all the money used for tv, print, and outdoor advertising, it could better be spent on reducing fares and improving services. Also an idea I think should be introduced, especially when they get around to introducing the Myki ticketing systems is reduced or refunded fares when services are not up to scratch. An example is when we’re forced to endure such events as the Grand Prix!

It has always amazed me that, as designers, I think we are generally a pretty average mob at branding ourselves. (more…)
