Ok, so I wouldn’t normally just poach another blog post, but this one is too good and something I am very passionate about – keeping our oceans clean – anyone swum in the bay lately?
In their continuing efforts to battle the ever growing mounds of garbage polluting our oceans and coastlines, Surfrider Foundation joined forces with Saatchi & Saatchi LA to sponsor the aptly titled Catch of the Day guerrilla ad campaign. Trash was collected from beaches across the US, then sorted, packaged like seafood, and strategically placed around local farmers’ markets. Directly targeting seafood consumers, this creative campaign draws attention to the gross debris littering our oceans and highlights how this pollution affects the consumer directly through the food they eat. Even if you’re not partial to seafood, its hard to miss the message!
Check out this cool new bathroom mat by Yanko Design. It’s made from live moss which is kept alive by the humidity from the shower. Why leave the moss outside on the rocks when you can throw it on a bath mat?
What do you get when you cross a great idea with some ace coding and design and the stack of information that is constantly being posed to the web? Digg Labs. Takes three of my favorite things – Design, Maths and Ideas (except of course beers, surf and…) and wraps em up into a neat display of the dynamic nature of the web. As items are posted to the web and get ‘diggs’ these little web aps graphically display the content based on its popularity. Arc, to me looks the best but Stack is my pick for the most functional. What, to me, makes this sort of stuff so cool is that the content becomes the design – so it will always look different.
Yep. Don’t be alarmed. We are just doing a bit of maintenance on our site over the next few days and need to switch it off every now and then. And when it is working you might find a couple of bits and pieces just aint working right. Apologies for the inconvenience.
I don’t know much about Tilman Faekler, the man behind the four pieces above. He’s an illustrator from Stuttgart, his background is in multimedia, and most of his work is done by hand. His work is subtle, nicely crafted and has an understated humour. But what I like most about it, and why I decided to write a post about it, is because it reminded me a lot of the really stylised illustrations from advertisments in the 50′s and 60′s, like this car ad:
It’s impossible to imagine that the biggest car company in the world would use an illustration like that now – the fact that there are no photos of the car would kill it straight away. Which is understandable, I suppose, but a shame – I’m sure someone like Tilman Faekler could come up with something better than that execrable “Zoom, zoom, zoom” campaign.
As the world gears up for President-elect Barack Obama’s historic inauguration, let’s celebrate President Bush’s time in office with video of his top 10 moments, courtesy of the folks at the Letterman Show:
Burger King in the old US of A have come up with a creative facebook application were if you dump 10 of your facebook friends you receive a free Whopper! Awesome.
You have just finished a design course and you want to get your folio online so you can approach that agency you love. Viewbook is a clean and cheap way to show your work digitally through a simple flash interface bound to impress most creative directors around town. It’s simple design makes the work the hero and the cost is a fraction of what it would cost to build a site from scratch. It’s not free and doesn’t have the community benefits of say a flickr but it does have some neat plug in’s and options.
