If you’re a Mac user running Leopard you can use Safari to create a widget from any part of a web page and see updates to it in Dashboard.

Browse to a web page in Safari and choose File > Open in Dashboard. Move your mouse over the part of the web page you want as your widget and click it. Now click the Add button that appears in the top right hand corner of the Safari window.

Your selection will then be converted into a Dashboard widget that will update when the original web page is updated.

MCG

Broadband internet provider Internode has entered into a three year contract to provide free wireless internet access to MCG staff and patrons.

Internode has voluntarily extended its network coverage to provide free wireless web browsing to any MCG visitors with a WiFi-capable notebook, device or mobile phone. This includes access for players, staff, administrators, media, corporate clients and the general public. All visitors to the Internode wireless service will access the facility via an Internode and MCG co-branded landing page.

Richmond fans will now have something to distract them during game time. Other than the score.

Douglas Bowman, Google’s first employed Visual Designer, has decided to leave Google (and word on the street is, he’s leaving to work at Twitter). That’s news in itself, but it’s his goodbye blog post that reveals some interesting nuggets about what it’s like to work in Google’s engineering-dominated environment.

Things like the iterative approach to testing 41 different shades of blue quickly became a hot topic in the web design community, but the whole post is worth a read just for the overall insight.

Of course, there are two sides to every story and Kevin Fox, former Google User Experience Designer, has weighed in on the subject, bringing some balance to the discussion.

Between Doug’s post and Kevin’s, we get a really interesting insight into how one of the biggest companies in the world does what we do — design!

A great microsite to promote Labuat’s  (a Latin artist from Spain) new single “Soy Tu Aire”. Just move your cursor, turn on the sound, feel the song and enjoy the full experience.  As you move your mouse freely, the brush strokes will create unpredictable abstract images and little animations. The faster the music, the heavier the brush strokes. It takes ages to load and you need  the latest flash player but definitely worth a play. I think this is the best “Follow the mouse cursor” animation ever done in flash!

The Rise of The Machine

March 27, 2009

At various points in human history, technological advancements have occured which render previously common fields of human endeavour obsolete. The development of the automobile, for instance, saw the end of the hansom cab driver; the shotgun’s rise saw the need for archers greatly reduced; and the steam shovel’s invention was the death knell of the common pit-digger.

Today, I came across an invention that will have the same effect on that most maligned of musician, the drummer. They will now go the way of the furbisher, the felmonger and the mustarder. Presenting

Welcome to the new Skittles website which is only around 300 pixels wide and does not scream BUY ME NOW. All navigated by an interface that floats over the top. You can watch their ad video on Youtube, chat with friends about Skittles in Twitter or Facebook or go to Wikipedia for its body content. Any Twitter user who tweets the word Skittles will see their message on the homepage; thus spreading the keyword Skittles.

Pure genius or just lazy? It is pretty bold for the brand to target the young target audience, utilizing social networking sites. They may have increased Facebook fans and generated a lot of Twitter posts, but will the campaign be a success in terms of profit sales? Whatever it is, it sure is a new way to market your brand.
