My quest for the holy grail

December 23, 2009

So I embarked on a quest for the holy grail, effective time management.

I bought myself a whiteboard and a “Day Planner” pad and on the bottom of this $2 pad, was some cracking advice.

The Six Principles of Time Management
1. Create a list of daily tasks
2. Give each task a priority of A B & C
3. Ensure that you work on the A tasks first
4. Handle each piece of paper on your desk only once
5. Ensure that you make the best use of your time
6. Don’t postpone anything – Do it now!

How could a $2 pad be so insightful?!

But do I wonder if point 4 means that it’s putting itself out of a job..

Rant

Its just under two weeks since I started at igloo, but I feel a part of the team already. And what a team! I had only been here a day or two before I was welcoming one new inuit after another. Its an exciting time to be at igloo with the team expanding rapidly. This of course made for a fab induction where we heard all about the history of igloo and each other. I found out we have an official Scottish Laird in our midst and a closet Home and Away fan (and its the SAME person).

Being in the throes of silly season, I’ve joined in time for our Christmas BBQ on the roof terrace. The igloo team and clients banded together in the sunshine for some beers, sausages and witty banter. Learning about Dan’s Karaoke dream, seeing his ukelele skills first hand and watching Vic’s football skills, were a great end to the week.

Hunting for music?

December 17, 2009

wearehuntedWondering what Twitterers are listening to?

We Are Hunted is a music streaming chart site based on the most popular music played or streamed on forums, music blogs, etc. The chart is updated in real-time by tracking what music online users are saying or playing. They now have a section where you can view the top 99 popular songs mentioned on Twitter.

I think this is an interesting social media experiment to see which age bracket majority of Twitterers are. Will we find Barry Manilow or Beyonce on the chart? Maybe both, who knows. Hey, when I clicked on it today, Elvis was up on number 4!

Its also a good insight to see which new artists are emerging BEFORE they make it to the top 40. If you feel like checking out new artists you were never aware of, you can click on their image and sample their music. To learn more on how it really works, click here.

I thought the internet had peaked.. I thought that all I was going to see would be more youtube videos of cats doing acrobatics and more flow charts about panflutes..

I was wrong..

I also thought that I had to leave my seat and get on a plane if I wanted to see Italy. I thought I had to invest money and time to see some worldly culture and rock sculptures from ancient times..

I was wrong..

I present Google Street View of the Pompeii ruins.

Way cool!

À bientôt…

Digital Medicine

Take a digital tablet, go on it will make you feel better – at least that is our digital promise. Funnily as technology expands devices seem to shrink. With the Mac tablet about 3 months away from hitting Australian shelves, digital innovation is not slowing down but instead consumers are craving more. For those not in-the-know, the tablet is basically a larger version of the iphone – for those that want to surf the web, read books and newspapers or watch movies.

Last Tuesday I attended the annual prescription – I mean prediction forum organised by AMIA, The Future of Digital: Forecasts & Predictions for 2010. It was an important event to hear from some of the industries heavy weights as to whats next and how both digital marketers and online businesses can plan for new digital prescriptions.

There is quite an art to choosing the right drupal module for your project. That being said one must always possess the understanding that open source developers are just that – they ain’t getting paid,
and thus are often working mad programming hours to keep up their involvement in the open source movement. You can check out the entire drupal module directory here. This is a third party site that compares and rates modules.

The diligence of some open source programmers I still find refreshing and inspiring, even when working under these conditions. So when choosing the right drupal module for your project, here are a few criteria I have found handy at the eleventh (or even twelfth) hour.

- how often has the module been updated
- the overall quality of the code
- how long is the bug list queue
- are any support requests being responded too
- what are the download stats for the module, how well is the community using it?
- does it pledge support for drupal 7 (ok, that is just me being choosy!)

My favourite module recently is Rules. It is an enhanced version of the core Trigger module, enabling administrators to create conditions, which are executed on occurring events. It also offers the ability to add chained conditional comments, with typical AND, OR, operators. This module is a dream for workflow management, and adding dependency to events occurring within Drupal. Looking forward to the Drupal 7 release of this module!

Don’t Fight the Future

December 8, 2009

How do you get a job that allows you to travel the world and give advice to leading companies about how THEY should be conducting THEIR business?

Meet Mike Walsh, an Australian futurist, author and CEO of innovation research agency Tomorrow, Walsh does exactly that and makes a substantial living doing so.

Walsh has just launched his book Futuretainment. Both a funky coffee table book and a clever critique on how consumer behaviour will redefine old business models and dictate new rules of engagement.

The book is an accumulation of Walsh’s diverse global experience in thought leadership and a response to the one question that haunts every marketers waking thoughts, what’s next?

Check out these shots of the recently crowned Victorian House of the Year designed by longtime igloo friend Peter Maddison (who also designed Transport at Federation Square and the Eureka Tower Skydeck) So if your looking to build a castle and have a few extra bucks in the bank and a couple of spare years up your sleeve (yep the place took 2.5 years to build) then give Pete a call. Click here to see more of Maddison Architects great work.

Angie igloo cropMy first week at igloo actually commenced before my first “official” first week at igloo.

The “unofficial” week included an induction (1/2) day and meeting the new eskimo’s who were going to pioneer the way forward for igloo.  It was then followed by a very informative & comical look (thanks for the pics boys) into the history, passion & the future of igloo by the Three Amigos.
