Andrew Greaves’ Story

Squadron Leader Andrew Greaves from Victoria is a former RAAF pilot, husband, brother and proud father. He was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2007 and needed numerous blood products throughout his lengthy treatment. Thanks to blood donors, he’s now in remission. Blood donors have not only changed Andrew’s life; but helped countless others around him - including his wife, children, sister, workmates, and the patients who’ve benefitted from his tireless work promoting blood donation.

That’s a pretty amazing difference.

Went to the Blood Bank at Brisbane HQ today to discover it was my number 300 donation !! Over 30 years of donating whole blood and plasma for those in need and gravely ill. Thanks to my dad for setting the example and encouraging me to be a donor all those years ago. I hope this might encourage others to donate as well - even if it is only once.... think about it please.

For my birthday, I decided to give blood for the very first time! It was a great experience and I even got a special sticker. I am grateful that I am able to give something to people who need it and it doesn't cause me any harm or any great loss. My blood will be going to help at least three very sick people and that's a pretty great feeling. Can't wait for my next donation of blood in 12 weeks, and plasma donation in 4 weeks.

Today I'm am feeling enormous gratitude. 11 years ago my son was given a second chance of life! A generous bone marrow donor on the other side of the world so selflessly gave this chance to him. Although we dont know this person, we hold you sincere in our hearts. We also would like to thank everyone that donates...lost count of the blood & platelet transfusions our son had over an intense 2 years of treatment, but without them, he would not be with us. Donating & nominating for the bone marrow

My 14 year old son, Scott, having his 8th blood transfusion. Just before this shot was taken, he had his 14th platelet transfusion. Scott has bone cancer, osteosarcoma, and lost his left arm and shoulder in march this year. I can not put into words, the gratitude we feel towards the many, many blood donors who have saved my son's life. Scott recently walked up to a donation van parked outside the hospital, and thanked the people waiting to donate. I was so very proud.

I recently gave blood for the first time, and I was asked what was my reason for donating. My reason is my son Malikye, now 4 years had lung surgery at 8 days old and used 2 units of blood. At 31 days old open heart surgery which used 4 units of blood. Without these donations my sons outcome would be different so I thank each and every one of you xxx Now it's my turn to give back.

After having my first child I suffered from a rare condition called uterine inversion. Part of this was major haemorrhaging. I lost over 7.5lts of blood and with out blood transfusions would not be here today. I was a doner before having given 7 times before being told my iron levels were too low. I will donate again to make up for what I was given. It really is an incredible gift!!! Thank you to all who ultimately saved my life.

I decided to donate blood as soon as I could. I'll be making my fourth donation on the 1st of August. I encourage anyone who is able to give blood to donate their blood, it doesn't take long, and it makes you feel great. I give blood because I know there is someone out there who needs my blood more than I do.

My sister was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. In such a short time she has already received many transfusions to help with the effects of this disease, making each day a little easier. Without the generosity of blood donors my sister would not be here today. Having only just turned 18 she has been given a gift no one could describe. We could never express how thankful we are of all those donors out there who help people less fortunate and give them a second chance at life.

I asked how long this had taken and he said 50 years because he had missed a few with illness along the way. The fellow in the bed next to me had lost an arm and a leg in a bad accident and was now a regular donor because he wanted to pay back the many transfusions he received after his accident. You meet lots of heroes at the Blood bank

Even though it was such a small amount (less then 30mls) she needed the sprightly little premmie fighter was back nearly immediately after it finished. As someone who works taking the blood it was truly a different experience seeing it used on my own child. THANKYOU everyone who gives

He also received many bags of platelets and blood during this treatment. Craig, myself and our two children want to express our heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful blood donors for giving Craig a second chance xx Mel

To the people who donated blood, that made such a difference to my mother when she had her blood transfusions. THANK YOU. Sadly, mum passed away in January 2013, but to see how she perked up after the transfusions, was amazing. I always thought about donating blood, but never really got around to doing it, but actually seeing the difference it made, well, I wanted to be able to pay it back, to help someone else and hope I've made a difference to someone too.

Giving whole blood then plasma and occasionally platelets but mostly plasma is rewarding and life giving for many people. So roll up your sleeves and donate you never know it might be you needing the products one day.

Thank you to all of you amazing platelet & blood donors out there. In 2007 I suddenly had a dangerously low platelet count of 3000 & required an emergency platelet transfusion. I would hate to think of what could have happened if it wasn't for the kindness & generosity of those who donate. Now because of my experience all of my family & friends donate.

5 years ago I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a blood cancer. I am cancer free, but my treatment is on-going - I have monthly trips to hospital for Intragram, which is keeping my immune system happy & healthy. I know the importance of donating bone marrow, as this one day may help save my life should the cancer return. I encourage everyone to give up a little of their time and blood to help save someone's life, as one day you may be the one in need! Thank you to all those who donate

I've had over 300 bags of blood products and 2 bone marrow transplants in the 3 years since I was diagnosed with Leukaemia. People like you are the only reason why I'm still here and I can never thank you enough for that! I'm not wasting that blood by the way - I'm lucky enough to be studying medicine and am already doing research to help cure diseases and get more people donating blood and marrow! And I share my story so other patients and people can benefit from it! http://bit.ly/1mTW6mp

During a long and traumatic birth with my first baby I hemorrhaged causing me too need a blood transfusion.I have always felt greatfull to the people that were 'brave' enough to donate blood to make it possible for me to see my baby grow up. Thirteen years on and I am now 'brave enough' to donate blood myself, as a way of saying thank you to those who donated for me. It always makes me feel great to donate knowing that I'm helping to save lives.

As a donor I would like to thank the amazing staff at the Lismore Blood Bank. They make being a regular donor such a fun and uncomplicated procedure that donating every fortnight is a pleasure. From Helen, the smiling face that greets you as you step off the lift, to the supportive professional nurses who interview and do the procedures; John the centre manager and the wonderful volunteers who provide refreshments - everyone makes the process of regularly donating plasma enjoyable and rewarding.

You don't see my face or hear my thanks, but please know your gift is priceless to me. I am alive today because of the selfless generosity of blood donors everywhere. I have & will be receiving transfusions of red blood cells every 3-4 weeks for my entire life, due to a hereditary blood disorder. Without the amazing gift of blood, simply put I would not be alive today, aged 37 yrs old. My life is a gift, from strangers, and I'll never forget this as I live each day to the FULLEST. Thank You!

The generosity of Red Cross blood donors has made an amazing and life saving difference to our family and friends. My 19 year old son James was diagnosed with blood cancer in February of this year. James was a regular blood donor and his illness was first detected at Red Cross Centre Hobart...his haemoglobin was too low. During the past 6 months of chemotherapy and treatment James has required numerous blood and platelet transfusions. James is now in remission...thank you for saving his life.

I started donating later in my life. This was due to my wife becoming afflicted with cancer. After spending much time in cancer wards, I met with patients whose cancer was exacerbated by the illness also eating away at their loss of basic lifestyle income and assets. Carers like myself were absorbed by the threat of a loved one and time stood still. Sickness can become a time of self reflection as well as a time to give back. I now donate Platelets & Plasma, drive & fly for Angel Flight to help

20 years ago my father had emergency surgery and spent 2 weeks in intensive care and many months recuperating. I am happy to say at age 95 he is still with us. This would not have been the case however if it hadn't been for the generous people who had donated blood which he received in great quantity during his surgery and immediate post op days. At the time I made the decision to donate regularly and have done so since then. I plan on keeping it up until I am 80!

Your kindness, dedication, and hard work extended my Mom's life significantly. It gave us treasured time with her that we wouldn't have had without you. My Dad is also a recipient of regular blood transfusions. Without his twice-a-month transfusions we would have lost a loving, generous, intelligent, giving man far too soon. All of his children and our respective families are now dedicated donors. Our gratitude knows no bounds.

In 2005 I was a happy healthy married mum of miss 7 and miss 1. I had a great job and life was fantastic. In a split second that changed. I was a pedestrian who was run over by a car and left with extremely life threatening injuries. Whether I lived or died depended solely on people who were complete strangers. I received a huge transfusion. There is no doubt I would have died without it. Today I am recovered. I've watched my girls growing up. I also have had a miracle baby 4 years later. Thanks

I donate blood because of my father. No one in my immediate family has required a blood donation. My father met a young girl years ago that was around the same age as my brother. She was suffering from leukemia and needed countless blood transfusions. He made it a priority to bring us to the blood bank to see him give blood and demonstrate the importance of the act. I love going to donate and seeing a kid devour a cookie whilst learning the importance of donations. Thank you for your legacy!

Our daughter Chloe is 11. She has common variable immune deficiency. Once a week she has an infusion of a blood product that is made from plasma. This immunoglobulin replacement therapy has changed her life. She used to spend a lot of time in hospital with severe infections. She wasn't able to do a lot, as she was sick or tired. These infusions mean she can do the things that little girls should be able to do.Blood donors make an amazing difference to our lives. We are forever thankful.

My daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia at age 4. She endured many months of chemotherapy and numerous transfusions. Now a happy and healthy 14 year old, this would not all have been possible if not for the numerous blood transfusions she received. Because of this my daughter was able to survive, as many others have been lucky to do so as well. But it was not only blood which she was given – it was also plasma and platelets. This is why I donate on a regular basis - it is life saving!!!

My thank you is to the wonderful "professional vampires" at the Latrobe Blood Donor Centre in Bundoora - they have helped me in overcoming my fear of needles. They are so very professional in their approach, whilst being able to have a giggle at the same time, that before I know it, I'm set up and my liquid gold is being collected. I make sure I go every fortnight to donate my A+ plasma, with platelets as they need them on the alternate fortnights too. I've just completed donation 12!

When I was 12 months old I was diagnosed with a chronic blood disorder which needed regular blood transfusions. My parents were advised I wouldn't live until the age of three years old. The only reason why I'm alive, it's because hundreds of people out there donated blood. Thank you to the hundreds of generous people who rolled up their sleeves and continuing donating blood to me regularly. I'm a married 41 year old mother who lives life to the fullest, Thank you for making this possible.

Thank you to my husband, Simon Paice, and my friend, Hank Louwen. They donate blood or plasma or platelets as required. Some of which goes to making my fortnightly dose of Intragam immunoglobulin. Maybe other other people in my sphere also donate, but I don't know of them - so thanks to them also, and in advance to new givers of the future.

I wouldn't be alive or as well as possible, without blood plasma product infusions, every 28 days. Thank-you doesn't truly express, how grateful I am, for my second chance of life, thirteen times a year.

1 bag of platelets made from the donations of 4 people saved my life...I needed many more bags of platelets and red pack cells over 2 months to keep me alive due to Aplastic Anaemia, a severe bone marrow failure. I was lucky my little brother was a donor match for a bone marrow transplant. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks to Jake Floros for inspiring me to give blood. Jake, a recipient of donated blood, and once a very sick boy has devoted his young life to coaching other young people to play cricket and keep fit. I see his picture every time I donate, and this give me a wonderfule feeling of my donation having significant value. Bless you Jake, have a great life

Not really a 'Thank You' - more a commiseration with Sqd Ldr Greaves. I was a blood donor until last March when the routine blood test before my blood donation at Gawler, SA showed my haemoglobin was really low - with subsequent diagnosis of CML.. So I am no longer a donor, and may possibly be a recipient in the years to come. That's life. Just glad I managed to donate some blood over the past few years.

I start self administration training of Intragam on Thursday, yippee. If it successful I'll no longer need to go to hospital every two weeks and there will be no more 1 1\4 inch needles into my chest. I'll be receiving Intragam weekly and therefore my immune system will become more stable. Hopefully it will reduce the number of infections I get and the constant use of antibiotics. I'm very excited about it, as it will give me more control over my life and I won't get sick as often.
